Cleanroom System Ceiling

Samsung Austin Semiconductor · Taylor FAB 1 · Taylor, TX

In Samsung Austin Semiconductor’s Taylor FAB 1, PROCON E&C crews install the cleanroom system ceiling area by area: the ceiling grid, blind panels, fan filter units (FFU) and blower filter units (BFU), chemical filters and the box lighting in the grid, with each area cleaned before turnover.

THE CHALLENGE

THE CEILING THE FAB HANGS FROM

Level and true

The ceiling grid sets the plane for everything above the cleanroom. The AMHS rails that come later hang from the grid’s main tees, so the grid has to be level and true first.

Filters flush with the grid

Every FFU filter face has to sit coplanar with the grid, and every opening without a filter is closed with a blind panel.

Area by area, in a live program

The fab is turned over area by area while other trades work around each one, so every area has to close out as one complete package.

WHAT WE DID

THE U.S. SEQUENCE, AREA BY AREA

We follow the U.S. sequence: the floor comes first, then the ceiling. Below is the part of that sequence in PROCON’s scope at Taylor FAB 1.

  1. 01

Grid leveled to the floor datum

With the floor in first, its datum is carried up to the ceiling and the grid is leveled to it.

  2. 02

    FFUs coplanar with the grid

FFUs and BFUs are set in the grid with their filter faces coplanar with the grid; blind panels close the remaining openings.

  3. 03

    Chemical filters and box lighting

Chemical filters and the box lighting in the grid go in as part of the same area package.

  4. 04

    Area cleaned and turned over

Each area is cleaned and turned over as one complete ceiling package, ready for the AMHS rails that hang from the main tees after the FFUs.

BIM coordinationPROCON’s BIM team has also run coordination for Samsung Fab 1: clash detection and shop drawings.

RESULT

WHAT IS DELIVERED

  • Ceiling turned over area by area as one package: grid, blind panels, FFU and BFU, chemical filters, box lighting and cleaning
  • Self-performed by PROCON crews

PROCON builds cleanrooms from ISO Class 8 support areas up to semiconductor fab cleanrooms at the highest cleanliness classes, and is building system ceiling packages for SK hynix in Indiana and Amkor in Arizona.
